We picked up Tommyknocker’s Oaked Butt Head Bock, partly because we had never seen a beer described as “oaked”. Tuned out an “oaked” beer is similar to its bourbon barrel cousin, which is not a bad thing at all.

Up to this point our panel has only identified two American made hefeweizens that deserve the name. Both come from Nebraska and while we are sure there are more, they appear to be scarce. So our friend Brian M. brought with him Sierra Nevada‘s Hefewezien claiming it passed. We also enjoyed a Mocha Porter from Rogue Brewing Company out of Oregon.

To reward our diligent test subjects we brought in Boulevard Brewing Co.'s Imperial Stout. Seemed appropriate to have a malty beer to finish the hops challenge.

The six week hops challenge came to an end. Our results were split. Marissa went from disliking hops to finding good flavors in hoppy beers. Brian M remained the same throughout the test. He understands why people use hops, but it is not a flavor he enjoys.

To keep pace with beers we have been drinking this Summer we brought out New Belgium's Abbey Ale. Goose Island has been good to us in the past, so we decided to bring out their IPA in honor of the hops challenge.

Week five of the hops Challenge. This week Marissa actually came to enjoy the hops. Enough that she graded that IPA in this show higher than Brian or I. Brian M. continued to stay stable. He is still not a fan of hops.

Brian M was kind enough to bring a couple beers we hadn't tried, the Orange Blossom Cream Ale form Buffalo Bill's Brewing and the Blue Star Wheat for North Coast Brewing. Both beers of summer.

Week four of the hops challenge came in. We are starting to see a change in perception of hoppy beers. Marissa reported that the beer didn't taste like weeds this time and it went down smoother and the hops hit more in the aftertaste. However she is still not a lover of hops but can tolerate them better now.  Brian M. on the other hand reported little to no change in hops perception.

We tried a beer new to our market the Koenig Ludwig Hefe-Weizen from Kaltenberg. Imported from Germany it is a solid decent wheat beer, but does it have the three flavors of a hefeweizen?

Week three of the hops challenge concluded. Both test subjects said it was a little improves this week. Enjoyment still not a word they would use for the experiment.

This week was the second of our Schell's Brewing podcasts. We looked at another beer from the August Shell's Brewery in New Ulm, Minnesota.

Always on the quest for good beer we sampled some beer from a local brewer. Three beers all of good quality with a some lively discussion.

We also started the four week Hops Challenge. Devised by a wise beer sage in Kearney, NE, it is an experiment to see whether a love of hops can be acquired.

This week featured the first of three episodes reviewing the beers of Schell's Brewing. We tried their dark, maifest, and stout with mixed results. For music this week, we featured Marc Gunn's tribute to a great BBC sci-fi comedy with his song The Mining Ship Red Dwarf. If you have never seen Red Dwarf, it is available on DVD and is one of the greatest TV shows ever made, in our humble opinion.

We finished up the beers Ryan acquired on his trip to Chicago this week. We enjoyed a bready farmhouse ale and a very stout brown ale. Always nice when both beers are tasty. We are sure the good people of take pride in their local breweries. No time for music to drink to this week, but we'll see if we can't fit it in next week.

Trying three beers at 11% and higher ABV is probably a questionable practice, but we did it anyway.  In order of ABV and tasting; Quadrium Ale from Urthel Samaranth (11%), Belzebuth from Brasserie Grain D'Orge (13%), and The Beast from Avery Brewing (16.31%).

For music we pulled a band that we've enjoyed many times. The Dust Rhinos and their song Here's to You. Think Budweiser's real men of genius ads in catchy song form. Good stuff.

We thought it would be fun to go to extremes this week. Bringing in Lucky beer from Australia and Sierra Nevada's Torpedo Double IPA. The contrast of a light lager and a double IPA seemed like a good idea and fun to try.

for the music this week we enjoyed a little Jonathan Coulton. Always good stuff.

The Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, Texas is celebrating its 100th year anniversary this year. To commemorate the event they released their aptly named 100 Commemorator brew and brought back the Kosmo's Reserve Lager. Having had the opportunity to enjoy some of their beer in the past we thought we should give this pair a go.

If there is one song that represents our panel it is The Jedi Drinking Test by the Dust Rhinos. Mix a little Celtic style with Star Wars references and beer drinking and we're good to go.

Episode 130 Beers of the Week

In honor of St. Patrick's Day we started the Guinness challenge. We rounded up three versions of Guinness. Two of them were draught. One in bottle one in a can. They were supposed to be the same, but we found out they each were a bit different.

Beer: Guinness Draught (Bottle)
Brewery: Guinness Brewery at St James Gate in Dublin, Ireland
Notes: Thin and smooth. The malt hits in the end with tastes of chocolate and coffee. Ranked in #3 in the Guinness Challenge.
John:       B Brian:     B- Ryan:    B B-
Marissa:  B- Anne:     C

Beer: Guinness Draught (Can)
Brewery: Guinness Brewery at St James Gate in Dublin, Ireland
Notes: Creamer than the bottle. Formed a nice head. The malt in this version was more apparent in the front of the flavor. More flavors of coffee and chocolate. Ranked #2 in the Guinness Challenge.
John:       B+ Brian:     B Ryan:    B+ B+
Marissa:  B- Anne:     B

Beer:
Guinness Import Extra Stout
Brewery: Guinness Brewery New Brunswick, Canada
Notes: The clear winner. It is thinker and robust coffee flavors with playful chocolate flavors throughout. Even though it tied in score, it was the clear winner of the Guinness Challenge. Funny Canadian Guinness beats Irish Guinness. Who would have thought.

Episode 130 Beers of the Week

Beer: Purple Haze RaspberryRasberry infused wheat.
Brewery: Abita
Notes: This beer was a mystery to us. It had a nice raspberry aroma and when you drank it it was like drinking carbonated mineral water. It had no real flavors and no real defects. Finished like it was not even there. We nicknamed it the "raspberry ghost".
John:       C Brian:    C C+
Marissa:  C Anne:    B

Beer: Censored Rich Copper Ale
Brewery: Laguanitas
Notes: Malty, hoppy beer overall ok. May have been a bit out of date.
John:       C Brian:    C C+
Marissa:  B Anne:    C+

Beer: Black and Tan
Brewery: Yuenglings
Notes: Fair. This particular beer seemed a bit thin flavor and body. Not bad, but didn't seem to gain anything by the blended flavors.

Beer:
Pre-Prohibition Lager
Brewery: Lucky Bucket Brewing Co.
Notes: Nice malty opening transitioning to a great hop flavor and a clean finish. The hop character is complex and subtle with citrus and floral flavors. Great conversion beer.  It is available now. Start looking for it in you live in Nebraska. If your local bar doesn't have it ask for it.

podcast Beers of the Week:

We did a little holiday traveling this week and enjoyed the hospitality of Thunderhead Brewing in Kearney, NE. We were joined by Trevor, Thunderhead's Owner and Brewer and Steve, who ensures the pub runs smoothly.

As an early Christmas present we had the joy of comparing last years Tiny Tim (Gold Medal Winner 2008 International Mead Festival) and the new Tiny Tim from this year. Trevor changed the recipe and while both are great holiday brews, there are distinctly different beers. Weather and time permitting, we strongly recommendreccomend getting out to Thunderhead to grab a pint and a growler to aid the holiday cheer.

We also sampled the Ginger Beer. A favorite of mine since I first had it in October. Since then the Ginger has mellowed and the malt flavor has emerged quite nicely. It is fun to seen how the beer developed in just a few months.

post Beers of the Week:

To start the evening off Brian's friend Paul brought a home brewed Scottish Ale. A very nice beer, well balanced in malt and hops.

A sampling of  Alaskan Brewery's beers this week.

Summer Ale: Seemed under carbonated for the a kolsch style. The flavor was a little off as well, but overall a decent brew.

Winter Ale: Made with pine tips. I tasted a lot like twizzlers candy. So if you like twizzlers you need to find this beer.

IPA: A fair IPA with a decent floral and citrus hop character. On the low end of the IPA strength chart for hops.

We grabbed a growler of the Impromptu Pale Ale from Gottberg Brewpub in Columbus Nebraska. A fine beer that starts off with a malt flavor and transitions into an enjoyable floral hop finish. Richard, the brewer, said the simcoe hops are responsible for the great hop flavor in this beer. We highly recommend this one and a trip to Columbus to try it.

Beers of the Week:

Nebraska Brewing is coming up on their first year next week and we went to visit to see what they have planned for the big occasion. While we were there we tried 3 fine beers.

Love Me Bitter: A nice beer with a great hop opening and a pleasant hop finish. Crisp finish and quite refreshing. I think it would go well with most dinners.

Pumpkin Beer: Normally not a big fan of spiced beer, this one I enjoyed. The spices don't overwhelm the flavor of the beer itself  and mixed with the pumpkin present a smooth pumpkin pie flavor. A creamy yet light beer that would go well with any holiday meal.

The Chardonnay Blonde Reserve: A beer released to celebrate one year of brewing. It is the Blonde Belgian Strong ale aged in Chardonnay casks. The flavors of the Belgian strong and the chardonnay are both present and combine to create a complex flavor and a high level of carbonation that make it a treat.

We also had a fantastic desert designed by Nebraska Brewing's very own Chef Adam. A cheese cake made with Chermaca Porter. It is light fluffy chocolaty goodness and must be tried

Over the last year Nebraska Brewing has produced some great beers and we hope they will be around for many years to come.

Beer of the Week:

Boulevard Brewing Co. of Kansas City, MO released an Oktoberfest this year under their Bob's 47 label.

Bob's 47 Oktoberfest is well balanced beer that is pleasant to drink. It is not a typical example of an Oktoberfest/marzen beer. The hop character is more pronounced and of a different flavor than you would expect from the style. The malt character lacks the roasted flavor we expect in Oktoberfests. That said it is darn tasty.

We samples three beers this week, 2 from the Point Brewery in Steven's Point, WI and one from the Charles Wells Brewery in the UK.

The Point Brewery

Nude Beach Summer Wheat:
A light bodies refreshing beer. I imagine it would a fantastic beer to have on a hot Summer cook out.

Belgian Wheat: Medium body with fruity esters. Nice crispness in the flavor and finish. Good choice for when you want a lighter beer

Beer from the Charles Wells in the UK

Banana Bread Beer:
Sounds interesting, is it like a good Hefe Weise? No, it's like a banana runts candy. The artificial banana flavor and harsh finish made this an unpleasant beer to drink overall. Great marketing on the bottle bad beerish liquid in the bottle.

Beers of the Week:

Happy birthday to us. We're celebrating being two years old this show. It's been a fun two years and we hope to have at least a few more. Thanks for your support.

Brian brought beer from the Estes Park Brewery. We tried three of them this show.

We're two years old

Stanley Redrum Ale: If you have ever read or seen Steven King's The Shining, you get the joke. The beer is well balanced with a slightly roast malt opening and a grapefruit hop finish, possibly cascade. We found this to be the best of the three.

Porter: Dark roasted malt with a coffee flavor, slight hop finish. Overall well balanced. Good example of the style, but nothing over the top.

Samson Stout: This one was a bit odd. Flavors of coffee similar to the porter but with a lighter mouth feel. After the porter the stout felt watered down which seemed out of style for the beer.

Beers of the Week:

This week we traveled to Gottberg Brewpub in Columbus, NE, for beer and fun. We had plenty of both. Richard and Paris showed us great hospitality. As a couple they make up 25% of Nebraska's ranked BJCP beer judges. Richard also runs a great beer site beerme.com where you can find great tasting notes on thousands of beers. Check it out!

The brewpub and Duster's, the attached restaurant, both have great atmosphere and food. The interior needs to be seen in person to be truly appreciated.

We enjoyed three beers.

Princess of Darkness Robust Porter: A beer Paris normally brews as it is her recipe. This particular batch was brewed by Richard. He said it never comes out as good we he does it. If this is a sub par batch, Paris's beer must be absolutely outstanding. The roasted malt flavors play out well with a nice satisfying finish. Almost as satisfying as the beer itself is how it got its name. Listen to the show for that one.

Abtskelelder Tripel: Coming in at 9.0% abv, this beer is deceptively smooth. Sure there is a little alcohol taste under the malt and fruit esters, but never enough to make you think it's 9.0%. I drank a total of three of these and I regret nothing.

Blood Red Beer: A beer that is not red or bloody, why the name. That's another great story that you'll want to listen to the podcast to get. It's a well balanced beer where hops and malt play like old friends. In retrospect and our advice to you, move this one up on the tasting order to better appreciate its subtleties.

Several growlers followed us home and if we had done better homework and realized that growler refills are only $5.50 at the time of this podcast. We would have brought all the Growlers we had and stocked up for the week. That price is unbeatable for quality beer.

We had a great time and hope to visit again, this time with our full kit. Regardless we recommend taking the drive

to Columbus with a cooler or two and clean empty growlers. It is well worth the trip.

Ryan acquired three beers from New Glarius Brewing Co. of New Glarus, WI.

Wisconsin Belgium Red: Can you say cherry, I knew you could. This beer is cherry with cherry and a slight cherry finish. You get the idea.

Fat Squirrel Nut Brown: A light nut brown that had nice overall character.

Spotted Cow Farm House Ale: It must have been the cherry or me being stupid, but this is a Saison style not a Trappist. Sorry. Enjoyable and light with fruity undertones.

Beers of the Week:

We met at Fireworks in Lincoln with Rich & Jim from Empyrean Brewing. Empyrean has a special place in the world of

BrewCast. They were the first Nebraska beer most of our panel ever tasted. As an originator of brewpubs in Nebraska, they have led the way to change Nebraska law to allow brewpubs and breweries. In addition to furthering the cause of beer in Nebraska, they make fine beers.

Chaco Canyon Honey Gold: Light in color, it is a refreshing beer of Summer. Smooth flavor, clean finish and enjoyable;

Burning Skye Scottish Style Ale: A special beer, we have converted more people to craft beer with this, than with any other beer. The subtle roasted flavors are rounded out by a bit of hops.

Third Stone Brown Ale: A favorite of Brian's, this brown ale is malty goodness. It is always smooth with a flavor that we've been told goes with Steak. Things that go well with Steak have to be good right?

Luna Sea ESB: This is the definition of a well balanced beer. The malt and hops play together very well. If you are in the unenviable position of only having one of Empyrean's brews, this is the one. To fully understand its greatness listen to the show and find a place that serves it at cellar temperate. (You can order your beer at Lazlo's and Fireworks in a Warm glass.)

Collapser Oatmeal Stout: Like Guinness, but better. A bit more flavor and just as black. Like stout? Like Collapser!

Darkside Vanilla Porter: Crafted from real vanilla beans, the quality of workmanship shows. It has a slightly sweet flavor that makes it a great desert beer and Jim claims it goes exceptionally well with Indian food. Something we will be trying.

Better World Wheat: Empyrean's newest regular lineup beer. It is somewhere between a wit and a hefe. Nice character and very refreshing. As of this writing it is currently what is on tap in our basement.

We also had the fun of trying two of the seasonal beers

Summer Common: A beer in the steam style Very Refreshing summer beer. Nicely balance beer, with a hop character that does not overwhelm the malt.

Rye IPA: Every Quarter Empyrean holds a context for home brewers. The winning brew will be scaled up and made on Empyrean's equipment and sold on tap in their restaurants. It is easy why this beer won. The refreshing taste of hops with a slightly dry finish, very well done.

On a non-beer related note we would also like to say that Fireworks has fantastic Mac and cheese. This may not seem

like a big deal, but it is and has to be tried to be believed.

Beers of the Week:

Paul, Kim and Dean were kind enough to invite us back to the Nebraska Brewing Company to sample some of their newer brews.

The title of this weeks episode refers to both Nebraska Brewing Company's  brewing prowess and their food. Specifically an appetizer that is pure genius. Take mozzarella fry it in batter. Then smother it buffalo wing sauce. The result is the best of cheese sticks and buffalo wings. This is quite possibly the best beer food I have ever experienced. Go order them with a Cardinal Pale Ale, you will not regret it.

On to the beers:

Golden Ale: A refreshing beer that makes the Summer heat easier to deal with. Refreshing and crisp it would go well with about any food. It has a kiss of hops that enhance the flavor and round it out nicely.

Irish Red Ale: Great example of the style. The toasted malt flavor makes everything more comfortable. It would compliment barbeque very well, but is quite capable of standing on its own.

Roggenbier: (updated: This is not a ryebock, see Nebraksa Brewing Company Brewer Tyson's comments below. Thanks Tyson!) We had the good fortune of trying a tap eight beer. A fine beer that our panel favorably compared to the Eos Hefeweizen. The flavors of banana and brown sugar make this a great desert beer. It's the subtle differences and flavors that made this beer stand out.

140 Schilling Scotch Ale: We hope this beer will make an appearance this Fall. It was a beer that dominates the discussion. It was smooth and hard hitting like a well aged barleywine. The secret is that it didn't require the aging to get there. A fine beer unlike any I've ever had.

This week we enjoyed Nebraska's beautiful weather and some fantastic beer. We were lucky enough to Richard from the Gottberg Brew Pub (Part of Duster's Restaurant) in Columbus NE. A man of many beer talents, he is a National Beer Judge and maintains one of the most comprehensive beer sites I have ever seen at beerme.com.

He brought growlers of his maibock to enjoy. As you would expect from a brewing renaissance man like Richard, it was fantastic. In my opinion it was true to style with a great malt character and light toast flavor. It finished smooth and clean. Our panel 's only regret is that there is not an infinite supply of this beer in walking distance from our residences.

Beer of the Week:
We had the good fortune to have Zac the head brewer of Upstream Brewing in Omaha and one the board of directors of the Brewers Association. He is a man dedicated to the art of brewing. He was kind enough to bring three excellent beers.

Amber Lager: Zac will soon be starting another brewery in Nebraska called Lucky Bucket.  The first beer we had is a pilot beer for that brewery. A smooth refreshing beer with a subtle taste of hops and a beautiful amber color. A form of this refreshing brew is on tap at Upstream currently.

Oak Aged IPA: An IPA aged in an oak barrel. The aging process refines the flavor and adds subtle wood flavors that make for a wonderful IPA that would go well with Barbeque and spicy selections.

1000 Batch Barley Wine: This is a beer that will likely knock you off you chair in a good way. It's malt character overflows and it finishes very nicely. A great local barely wine that makes any time better.

We tried a beer that was new to the Lincoln market this week, Sierra Nevada's Southern Hemisphere Harvest. It is the newest addition to the Sierra Nevada Harvest series of beer. Beers of the Week:

Marrisa has a thing for fruity beer. She contends that they are indeed good and not crap which is the position of most of the panel. In the battle to prove her point she graciously provided Major Tom Pomegranate Wheat from the Fort Collins Brewery.. Our panel felt that it had a hoppier character than we expected out of most wheat beers. The pomegranate flavor was pleasantly understated and finished off the taste. It was not a bad beer, but our panel felt that other brewers have done a better combination of fruit and beer. Our panel gave it a 70% approval rating.

Beers of the Week:
For our first Episode outside of the Brew Cave we traveled to The Nebraska Brewing Co and visited their 8 taps of happiness. Paul and his crew had a couple surprises in store for us.

Belgian Blonde: This deceptivly smooth Belgian style was a great start. It ranks in at 10% and was very enjoyable. Treat it with respect and it will treat you well.

The eight tap handles at Nebraska Brewing
The eight taps of happiness
Dopplebock: Nebraska Brewing Companies other German style beer, Eos Hefe Weizen, is a favorite of our group. If this was on tap as a regular beer it would rival it. This doppelbock is everything there is to love about the style. Great malt character with a fine finish. Due to technical difficulties this is missing from the recording. Our advice go buy it now, because it'll be gone soon and it is not one to miss.

Now we come to the first surprise Paul had in store for us. He let us try two beers from the tap 8 program. For those unfamiliar with Tap 8, it allows members of the
Ale Nation to sample and rate specialty beers brewed at Nebraska Brewing Company that are not available to the general public. They estimated there will be 50 Tap 8 beers in a given year. If trying new beers wasn't reason enough to join, you also get a voice in refining the recipes and possibly what goes on the 2 rotating taps. A very cool program.

Robust Porter:  A enjoyable dark beer that had a full flavor. A great take on the style with a distinctive twist. I will tell you it was excellent and leave it at that as it is no longer available. Drink to its hopeful return.

Old Ale: The current beer on Tap 8, it is overflowing with character. The it is an amazingly malty beer that is an individual and proud of it. The closest thing to it we agreed was Old Peculiar, but it's flavor far outmatched it. It is not a beer to soon be forgotten.

The Tap 8 beers we tried were fun beers and we believe that the quality of brewing we have seen from Nebraska Brewing Co. makes the Tap 8 program a requirement for beer lovers in the Omaha area.

Paul next showed of the abilities of his chefs Will and Adam. When you go to the Nebraska Brewing Company you will see that a good portion of their menu utilizes their fine brews to make great food. Now Will and Adam are experimenting with beer desert s and we got to taste a few.

Belgian Wit Garditas: A combination of the Belgian flavors with citrus tastes that was what I always wanted sherbet to be. It was refreshing and tasty. You can hear from our panel how much they enjoyed this.

Cherrmacca Chunky Chocolate Ice Cream: Amazing, made from the leftovers of the brewing process for Cherrmacca Porter. Our panel loved it. We hope for a Nebraska Brewing Co. ice cream stand in the near future.

Paul had one final surprise a very special beer for our 100th beer on the show.

Samichlaus: This potent beer boasts to be the most potent lager in the world ranking at 14% ABV. It is a tasty beer that demands you drink it slow. Below is a picture of Gale, Ryan, Brian, & Anne holding the bottle.
Brewcast Crew Holding the empty bottle

Thanks again to Paul and everyone at Nebraska Brewing.Co.

Beer of the Week:
Brian brought Wild Dog Collaborator Doppelbock from Flying Dog Brewery. It is a opensource beer and the recipe is at  http://www.opensourcebeerproject.com/  if you want to try to make a couple bottles. Opensource beer is a nifty project and we hope it helps spread the beer knowledge.

The beer itself was something of an enigma. It is labeled as a doppelbock, but our panel felt it was closer to a pale ale in taste and hop character. Our panel gave it a 70% and agreed it was a overall good beer just not what we expected out of a doppelbock.

If you have a beer you would recommend we try email us at info@brewcast.net or call us at (402) 817-0351.

Beers of the Week:
We had the great fortune of having Trevor and Matt from the Thunderhead Brewing from Kearney, NE come to visit. Determined to prove that some of the best beer in the world is brewed here in the fine state of Nebraska they brought 5 beers for the panel to enjoy.

Golden Frau Honey Wheat: We started with this clear golden beverage.A Silver award winner at the International Mead Festival in the category of a bragget. Its nice to see judges that know quality. The honey character comes through without overpowering the beer. Our panel loved this beer and it was recognized as the best honey wheat we most of us had ever enjoyed. It received a 100% approval rating.

Hefe Weizen: An American Hefe Weizen with its own individual character. A very enjoyable beer  with subtle flavors that distinguish it from other hefe weizens. As the weather warms up this beer will be a great refresher from the heat. Our panel  gave it a 100% approval rating.
Growler of Thunderhead Honey Wheat

Porter: A porter in name and color, but it could be it's own distinct style in taste. I don't know if it has a full name yet and I would call it Unexpected Comrade Porter, because it catches you a little off guard, but in a good way. It has both dark chocolate and orange flavors that play with nicely the malt taste. As you'll see all the beers were enjoyable, but if you could only try one this is the one, because it is different from anything I have had before and that is not an experience I often get. We felt it was a great beer to finish off a meal, a desert beer. And the more you had, the stronger the citrus taste becomes.  It obviously received a 100% approval rating.

Cornstalker Espresso Stout: A gold medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival a few years back If you like coffee and stout this is a no brainer. The flavors play well together smooth and enjoyable. If we lived a different time this would be the best part of waking up. This beer would make a heck of a muse the combination of a great taste, alcohol and caffeine could produce great works. Our panel gave it a 100% rating and Anne is bugging me to acquire more.

Ceremony Tatanka IPA: A dry hoped IPA that wants you to know that has a degree in hops and know how to handle them. In my mind another fine example of the IPA style to come out of Nebraska. Our panel gave it an 100% approval rating for the style.

If you have not had a chance to sample Thunderhead's brews we highly recommend a road trip to central Nebraska. It will be worth your time. The original brew pub is located at 18 East 21st street in Kearney and their beers are available at select locations throughout the state.

Beer of the Week:
Mariissa our resident champion of fruity beers brought Wild Blue a Blue Berry lager. The best we can tell it is brewed by Anheuser-Busch. Our panel had polar opposite feelings about this one. They either loved it or hated it, I feel Beer Advocate summed up my feeling pretty well.

The one thing our panel agreed on is that it tasted more like a wine cooler than a beer. This seemed to have some of the panel love it and others hate it. Our advice if you like wine coolers you might like that it.

If you have a beer you would recommend we try email us at john@brewcast.net or call us at (402) 817-0351.

Beer of the Week:
This week we tried Breckenridge Brewery's Oatmeal Stout. A beer as black as night and overall smooth feel. It had a good taste and was appropriate for the style, but was not exceptional. Our panel rated it as an average beer. One we would recommend over Guinness, but not as highly as some others in the category.

On a side note I look forward to trying their Pandora's Bock.

Beers of the Week:
This week we had the pleasure of having the Paul Kavulak, brewer and owner, and Dean Dobmeier, the head brewer, from The Nebraska Brewing Company in Papillion, NE stop by. They are good people who are proud of what they do. So did they bring their favorite beer that they brew? No, they brought five. We sampled them in order on the IBU scale.

Infinite Wit:
We started with this cleverly named beer. A Belgian wit that was both refreshing and flavorful. A light beer with a refined citrus flavor that won over our panel. It received a 100% approval rating and even won over a few of our panelists to the style.

Eos Wheat:
This is possibly the best example of a Hefe weisse I've had since I was in Bavaria. It has the three flavors you want in the style, Banana, Bubble gum, and clove. Our panel enjoyed the flavors, Gale commented it was the first time he could actually taste all three in one beer. It also received a 100% approval rating from out panel.

Growler from the Nebrask Brewing Company

Brunette Nut Brown Ale:
The third beer we sampled won my wife over immediately. It has a darker color, but retains a lighter taste. A taste which includes flavors of coffee and the reason my wife loves it so. This was an incredibly smooth beer. So tasty that our visiting Texan Amy, admitted that Nebraska has better beer than Texas. Now we aren't going to comment on that, but getting a Texan to say any state has something better is quite an accomplishment and of course our panel gave this fine example of a nut brown a 100% approval rating.

Cardinal Pale Ale:
Entering into the realm of hoppier beers the Cardinal Pale Ale was next. It is dry hopped to give it a very full nose. For those that are not hop lovers I would recommend this beer. It has a full hop flavor without being too bitter. The flowery taste of the hops would compliment many foods. It receive a 100% approval rating from our panel. You might see a pattern here.

India Pale Ale:
We drank this beer in memory of Jeff. Ranking in the 70s of the IBU scale it is hoppy beer. Even though it ranks quite highly on the scale it remains a well balanced beer. The flavor has a one two punch. It starts of with the maltier characteristics and follows up with a hit of hops. Quite good and our panel agreed it deserved a 100% approval rating for the style.

We recommend that if you can get to the Papillion area that you stop in at The Nebraska Brewing Company at 7474 Town Center Pkwy, Suite 101. The beer was great and since recording we have had the opportunity to go to the restaurant. There will be an article coming on that later this weekend, but let me assure you the food is as good as the beer and was well worth the trip from Lincoln..

Amy's Beer:
Amy came to visit us from Texas. She has called into the show before and is a regular listener. She was kind enough to Bring Goose Island's Bourbon Cask Imperial Stout. One of our favorite styles this black as night beer was a great way yo finish the night. It had a strong flavor and a bit of a punch to it. One which our panel and guests enjoyed. It also received a 100% approval rating making for a perfect six pack of beers.

Thanks to Dean and Paul; of the Nebraska Brewing Company and Amy for bringing the great brews. There is no music section this week as the show clocked in at almost a hour and a half due to the great beer discussion.

Beer of the Week:
This week Ryan brought two of Boulevard Brewing Co.'s Irish style beers to celebrate St. Patrick's day.

First off we triesd the Dry Stout. A tasty black beverage in the line of Guinness. Not a bad American beer to spend the holiday with.

Next we tried Boulevard's seasonal Irish Ale. The panel enjoyed the smooth flavor of this ale and mixing it with the dry stout produced a great beverage.

Music to Drink to:

To help celebrate we listened to Murder The Stout and there fine drinkin tune Streams of Whiskey.

Brian, a fellow Empyrean Beer Tour Veteran, brewed an ESB. Then He gave us another set.

We have enjoyed this beer before, but it was even better the second time. A nice balance of hops character and bitterness. Excellent work.

Beer of the Week:
This week we tried a beer new to our state, Sante Fe Brewing Co's State Pen Porter. The Sante Fe brewing co has been brewing since 1988 in Sante Fe, New Mexico, but has only been in Nebraska for a few weeks.

Our panel gave it a 100% approval rating. They commented that it had a nice malty flavor with a smooth mouth feel. It's dark color made us happy and it full flavor made us forget that it was winter.

The only unfortunate thing was it was so popular that there was not a full bottle for the photograph. Trust us it was a beautiful dark brownish black.

If you have a beer you would recommend we try email us at john@brewcast.net or call us at (402) 817-0351.

Beer of the Week:
Gale brought  a beer black as night, Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout from North Coast Brewing Company. True to the style it is a heavy, enjoyable brew.

Our panel felt it has a bit more of a hop bite than we were used to in the style. We thought it would be great with beef on a cold night.

If you can find it we recommend giving it a try as it is different than most other brews out there.

Beer of the Week:
We enjoyed the company of Eric and Travis from Moran's Liquor and they were kind enough to bring Mojo IPA and Mojo Risin' Double IPA, both from the Boulder Beer Company. Having both gave us an opportunityoppurtunity to taste and compare.

The Mojo was a good IPA with a citrus flavor. Our panel suggested it would be ideal with spicy food.

The Mojo Risin was a bit smoother. It had a satisfying mouth feel went down quite easily. Coming in at around 9.0% by volume it is a fast acting ale.

Thanks to Moran's Liquor for providing the beer and adding to the discussion. If you like the IPA style, we would recommend giving Mojo and it's big brother Mojo Risin a try.

Both of these brews and a fine selection of other beers can be found at Moran's Liquor at 33rd and A St. in Lincoln.

Beer of the Week:
The band provided the beer this week. A favorite of working musicians and those that know their cheaper beers, Heileman's Old Style. Official Beer of the Chicago Cubs (I don't know if that's a selling point.).

Our panel came to the conclusion that Old Style is one of the best beers in it's price range and in some cases, say Budweiser, is better than beers twice the price.

Old Style Can

Music to Drink to:

We had a first in the Brewcave this week, live music. What band would be so original as to play in a crowded 10' x 10' room loaded with 9 people, a dining room table  9 chairs, and a couple of lamps? The Allendales are just that kind of band and we were lucky enough to have 3 out of 4 of them in the Brewcave this week. . Some people like to have a band's music classified into genres and the genre I would put the Allendales into is "Goes Good With Beer". On the show in a tiny room they preformed Better Times, Cigarette, & Someday Soon live and it made the Old Style that much better. They will be playing at the Zoo Bar in Lincoln, NE on March 1st, go listen and drink. You may regret it, but not because of the music.

Below: the Darryl, Ken, and Shaun prepare to play in the Brewcave. Feel free to admire our keen decorating sense and choice of blankets.

Home Brewer's Best
Brian, a fellow Empyrean Beer Tour Veteran, brewed an ESB. Then Brian in a truly magnanimous gesture gave us a couple bottles.

Brian's ESB was a smooth and tasty beverage. It had the character of hops without them being over powering. The beer finished clean and our only complaint was that we only got two bottles. We could have easily enjoyed at least ten times that many.

Happy Halloween. This is our Second Annual Scary Beer Night. The goal is to bring the worst beer we could find and see who wins, because in this contest we all lose.

We were fortunate to have two great groups of guests this week.

We had three of the No Coast Derby Girls join us. Lt. Slam-her, Miss Anthropy, and  Skid Row. These are some tough contenders. They took home the Redbridge, because they liked it. That was the beer out panel chose suicide over. The worst beer we could find didn't phase them I don't think their next bout with the girls form Topeka will either. That bout is Nov 16th in Lincoln, get tickets now. A little bit of advice, get the floor seats they are worth every penny.

Jared Sonder and Chris Gianunzio from the band Curbstone also joined in the festivities. They were good sports about the crappy beer and to their credit, they wasted no beer, drinking down the worst we could find without regret, well maybe a little regret. They were also kind enough to let us feature their song Condemned off their album The Beginning.  You can see them live on Nov 9th at Ron's Pub at 138th and O. Check them out. It will rock.

Thanks to both groups of guests who were also kind enough to bring some crappy beer to enter into the fun.

For those of those of you who were wondering Budweiser's Clamato concoction won as the worst beer. It is horrible, give it to your friends. The smell alone is enough to make you ill.

See you next week.

Beer of the Week:
Staying with the Oktoberfest theme we returned to Germany. This week we enjoyed Warsteiner's Oktober fest edition beer. (The space between Oktober and fest is required for any German beer not part of the original Munich brewing houses). Our panel seems to enjoy the German marzen style beer giving it a 92% approval rating. Here is what our panel had to say about the beer:

Brian: It's a good beer. It's a little on the light side. A good session beer.

Gale: I can drink this all night long.

Ryan: Very good, Thumbs up.

Marrissa: I liked it a lot. I think it was the best Oktoberfest I've had.

Jeff: No it's not as good as their dunkel. It's a decent beer, but I've had better Oktoberfest.

John:  Overall a good Oktoberfest. I've had better, but Warsteiner is a great beer to start on.

Beer of the Week:
This week we tried Summit Brewing Co.'s Oktoberfest Marzen Style Beer. It received a luke warm reception from our panel getting a 50% approval rating. Here is what our panel had to say:

Brian: It's a little on the sweet side.

Anne: It's a little bitter and it doesn't compare to the other marzens we've had.

Gale: I would give it a thumb sideways. It's a little too bitter for me.

Jeff: It's better than tap water. Not really a big fan of this one.

John: It's a little bit bitter than the regular marzen.

Since it is that time of year again, we recommend getting out there and trying any Oktoberfest you can, but especially your local brewer's.

Beer of the Week:
This week we enjoyed a a staple of the German beer world, Paulaner's Oktoberfest. This is one of the five true Oktoberfest beers produced in Munich. Our panel gave it a 100% approval rating, but it was one vote short of being put into the, soon to be built, BrewCast Hall of Fame. Here is what our panel had to say about it.

Brian: Very good beer. I like the flavor.

Marissa:  It was good.

Anne: I enjoyed it. It is a lovely drinking beer, lovely and smooth.

Jeff: Decent beer. I personally prefer more hops.

John
: I like marzen. An enjoyable beer with a slight smokey flavor.

Since it is that time of year again, we recommend getting out there and trying any Oktoberfest you can, but especially your local brewer's.

Music to Drink to:

Beer of the Week:
This week we tried Michelob's Honey Lager. Our panel had mixed feeling about it giving it a 50% approval rating. Here is what they had to say about it:

Brian: It's a decent beer with a sweet taste at the end.

Ryan: Fairly decent beer. I usually like more flavor in my beer.

Marissa: Smooth. I liked the honey flavor.

Anne: The lager has a good mouth feel. It's a good beer, light, refreshing, and sweet.

Jeff: This beer is crap. (No really, it's what he said)

John: The flavor doesn't taste like it was brewed. The taste is like they added the honey afterwards.

A mixed bag from our panel. The final conclusion was that it was beer with an overall light taste and strong honey finish.

Beer of the Week:
Brian provided a six pack of Boulder Beer's Singletrack Copper Ale. It had an interesting taste character. Here is what our panel had to say about it:
Ryan:
Overall a clean beer. Kind of a burnt taste. Little bit bitter.

Jeff: It's got a sweet aftertaste that I'm not fond of.

Anne: I kind of like it. It reminds me of something I would want to drink at Thanksgiving.

Gale:
It has a pretty bottle. It has an aftertaste I don't care for. (hands bottle to Jeff).

Marissa:
I didn't care for it either. It was too bitter.

Brian:
Decent beer. Bitter taste at the beginning., sweet at the end.

John
:  I liked the character. Started off bitter and finished sweet. I think it would go well with a smoked cheese.

The beer received a 50% rating from our panel and we all agreed it had an interesting taste.

Gale: It was good, definitely a good summer beer.

Marissa: I think it's a good summer beer. Light good taste. Goes down easy.

Beer of the Week:
We enjoyed BridgePort Brewing Co.'s IPA this week. It was recommended to us by Mark in Oregon. After trying the IPA it is apparent that Mark makes good beer recommendations. Our panel gave it 100% based on style and inducted it into our Brew Hall of Fame (opening soon). Here is what they had to say about it.

Brian
: Really smooth, good mouth feel.

Ryan: Really good for an IPA. As for the style really good, great taste.

Marissa:
Good for an IPA

Gale: Good compared to the other IPAs I've tasted

Jeff: That was pretty good.

John
: Very Hoppy, but they finished it off nicely. It doesn't have a bite at the end like I'm used to in an IPA. Very good.

A great IPA. We recommend you try it. Thanks again to Mark for the recommendation. If you have a beer we should try email it to us at brewcast@gmail.com

Beer of the Week:
Ryan supplied Windmill Wheat from the Millstream Brewing Company in Amana, Iowa. It received a 92% rating from our panel and here is what they had to say about it:

Brian
: Decent beer, not too heavy. pretty light, nice color to it.

Gale: Nice and light, better than the massed produced beer. It has a little taste at the end, that I can't quite put my finger on, good beer.

Marissa: Good summer beer, I liked it

Ryan: Very good beer, it has a fine little aftertaste that's like tea. Right at the end it tastes like tea.

Jeff: I'm still trying to place the aftertaste. It kind of reminds me of walnuts.

John
: Light Summer beer. It is tasty.

Overall our panel enjoyed this one. A good summer beer we recommend trying if you can find it in your area.

Beer of the Week:
Brian brought over a Sam Adams' Brewmasters Collection Cherry Wheat. I know your asking why we would drink a fruity beer. It is this months session beer. So we gave it a go. Here is what our panel had to say about it.

Brian
: I'm really not liking this one

Marissa: Tastes like cherry mash.

Ryan: Still trying to figure out what the cherry flavor is, but its a bit much. Tastes like cough medicine.

Anne: Red death flavor.

Jeff: It was as bad on the first sip as the last

John
: Tastes like cherry NyQuil

It received a  17% approval rating from our panel.  As an experiment I took a can of MGD that was left in my fridge (Don't ask) and poured grenadine in it. In a blind test, I served it in a black coffee mug, the panel liked it better. We look forward to trying Sam Adams' good beers next chance we get and putting this as far behind us as we can.

Beer of the Week:
We tried Skinny Dip the summer seasonal offering from the New Belgium Brewing Company in Fort Collins, CO. Our panel had mixed feeling about this beer giving it a 68% approval rating. Here is what they had to say about it:

Brian: Good summer beer, little lime citrusy aftertaste, good beer.

Gale:
Overall, I think I would drink this after lawn mowing, Anything where your sweaty and hot, good beer for that.

Marissa: I didn't like the hoppy flavor with the lime.

Anne: I would drink it again if it was free. For being hoppy and limey it wasn't bad, surprisingly.

Jeff: I might drink it before lawn mowing. Nothing really great, but better than most mass produced beers.

John
: I think it is overall pretty good. A great lawn mower beer.

Skinny-dip
A beer with its own character. I would expect we will try more from the good people at New Belgium

Beer of the Week:
We tried the Polestar Pilsner from the Left Hand Brewing. A different type of pilsner. Here is what our panel had to say about it:

Brian: A little hoppy for a pilsner. It's not a bad beer.

Gale:
Hoppy Pilsner. First drink is hoppy. It is definitelydefinitley smoother after that.

Marissa: It's too bitter for me.

Anne: I wouldn't recommend going to this until your 3rd or 4th beer.

Jeff: I don't think it's that hoppy, decent enough for a hot day.

John
: Not a bad beer. Good lawnmower beer. Definitely hoppier than what I normally think of when I think pilsner.

Something different for a pilsner. We look forward to trying one of their darker beers this Fall.

The bottles were neat, with random chapters of the James Squire story on each bottle. In our six pack we had chapters 1,4, and 5. We will be loading scans of the labels to the page this weekend. Beer of the Week:
For the meaning of life we looked deep inside a bottle of the Capital Brewery's Island Wheat. Made in Middleton, Wisconsin, Capital Brewery started brewing 1986. They currently make 14 other beers as well. Here is what our panel had to say about their Island Wheat:

Brian: More please. It was a good beer, better than Boulevard Wheat.

Gale: Very good, if I had two more thumbs I would give it 4 thumbs up.

Marissa: Definitely two thumbs up.

Ryan: Probably the best wheat beer I've ever had.

Anne: Pretty good, makes me want brats. It has a slight citrus flavor very good overall.

John: Thumbs up, and this goes out to Jeff, it's very smooth. I would say it is one of the better summer beers I've ever had.

Since Island Wheat earned a 100% approval rating from our panel. If you've had Island Wheat let us know what you think of it here in our new forums.

Anne: A good beer for parties.

Jeff: Quite possibibly better than the rabid kitten with a pitchfork that chases me in my dreams. I didn't like it.

Beer of the Week:

This week we tried Steinlager from New Zealand. It earned a 50% approval rating from our panel. This may have been due to the curse of the green bottle. We had two skunked beers out of the six-pack. Here is what the panel had to say about it:

Brian: Nice Summer beer, light in color

Marissa: Doesn't have too much of a flavor to it. It's alright.

Anne: If I open a skunky beer. I just can' drink it.

Ryan: Probably not my first choice, it's not too bad. It tastes almost watered down. There isn't a whole lot to it.

Jeff: Since my beer is borderline skunked. I won't pass any judgment on the beer.

John: I put it up there with Miller Lite.

The only other comment the panel had was that the bottles were under 12oz. They came in at 11.15oz bottles or 330ml. This enraged Jeff's hatred of the metric system. He was last seen chanting base 10, I hate base 10.

Note: Through a little research we found out that Steinlager changed its bottle from brown to green on the recommendation of an American consultant in 1973. It was done to match other premium brands.
